Job Overview The Digital Practitioner plays a key role in supporting the safe and effective use of digital systems across clinical services at the Royal United Hospitals Bath. Working as part of the Digital Clinical Team, the post holder provides profession‑specific expertise (nursing, midwifery or allied health) to the design, implementation, optimisation and adoption of digital systems, including the Electronic Patient Record.
The role acts as a bridge between frontline clinical teams and digital colleagues, ensuring that digital solutions support safe, effective and efficient clinical practice, improve data quality, and enhance patient and staff experience. Post holders will support engagement, training and digital confidence within their professional group, contribute to service improvement and quality initiatives, and play an important role in organisational readiness for major digital change.
These are fixed‑term, part‑time development opportunities, designed to build future digital capability and support succession planning within nursing, midwifery and AHP professions.
Prior formal digital roles are not required; the Trust welcomes applications from clinicians with an interest in digital practice and a willingness to develop further.
Main duties of the job
Main duties of the role
- Act as a profession‑specific Digital Practitioner (nursing, midwifery or AHP), providing clinical expertise to the design, implementation and optimisation of digital systems, including the Electronic Patient Record (EPR).
- Act as a key link between frontline clinical teams and digital colleagues, ensuring digital solutions support safe, effective and efficient clinical workflows.
- Support staff engagement, training and confidence in the use of digital systems, including providing visible, on‑the‑ground support in clinical areas.
- Contribute to improving clinical documentation and data quality, working with services to identify issues and support safe, consistent practice.
- Support service improvement and change activity enabled by digital systems, including optimising workflows and embedding new ways of working.
- Identify, escalate and help resolve digital or data‑related issues through appropriate clinical and digital governance routes.
- Contribute to organisational readiness for major digital change, including preparation, deployment and stabilisation of new or evolving digital systems.
- Maintain professional registration and contribute to ongoing learning in digital transformation, clinical safety and quality improvement.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities The Digital Practitioner plays a key role in supporting the delivery of the Trust’s digital strategy by providing clinical expertise to the design, implementation and optimisation of digital systems.
Working as part of the Digital Clinical Team, the post holder acts as a clinical voice within digital programmes and projects, ensuring that system design, configuration and change reflect safe, effective and efficient clinical practice. The role supports clinical transformation by improving how digital systems enable high‑quality patient care and positive staff experience.
The post holder will support engagement, training and adoption of digital systems across nursing, midwifery, AHP and wider multidisciplinary teams, and will contribute to quality improvement and benefits realisation activity associated with digital change.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Act as a clinical digital practitioner within digital projects and wider programme teams, providing professional advice to support safe system design, configuration and implementation.
- Work collaboratively with clinical, digital and operational colleagues to ensure digital solutions reflect service needs and improve patient care.
- Support clinical engagement activity, acting as a link between frontline staff and digital teams.
- Contribute to the review and redesign of clinical processes, challenging historic ways of working where appropriate.
- Support benefits realisation by helping services understand and adopt digital change.
- Apply quality improvement approaches to support digital optimisation and service improvement.
- Contribute to project reporting, risk management and assurance activity as required.
Professional Development and Education Responsibilities Digital education and staff support
- Support staff to develop confidence and competence in the use of digital systems, including electronic patient records and associated digital tools.
- Identify digital training needs and support the delivery of appropriate training and guidance.
- Provide visible, accessible support to staff in clinical areas, offering coaching and guidance to improve digital documentation and data quality.
- Support the development of super-users or digital champions
Professional development
- Maintain professional registration (NMC / HCPC as appropriate) and ongoing continuing professional development.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of appropriate digital systems and emerging digital developments.
- Participate in learning activity related to digital transformation, clinical safety, data quality and service improvement
Person specification
Qualifications / Professional Status Essential criteria
- Registered healthcare professional with current registration with the NMC or HCPC.
Clinical experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience of working in a clinical setting within nursing, midwifery or allied health professions.
- Good understanding of clinical workflows and multidisciplinary working.
Digital experience and confidence
Essential criteria
- Experience using electronic patient record systems or other digital clinical systems in practice.
- Demonstrates digital confidence and literacy, with the ability to adapt to new systems and ways of working.
Supporting change and improvement
Essential criteria
- Experience of supporting colleagues with changes to practice, systems or processes (e.g. training, coaching, informal support).
- Evidence of participation in service improvement, quality improvement or change activity, whether formal or informal.
Communication and engagement
Essential criteria
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain digital or system‑related concepts clearly to non‑technical clinical colleagues.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of staff and act as a link between clinical teams and non‑clinical colleagues.
