Field Service Manager – UK & Ireland
Berthold Technologies (UK) Ltd
Job Description
Radiometric Process Measurement, Radiation Protection & Bioanalytics
Location: Home-based, with regular travel to customer sites across the UK & Ireland, the Berthold UK office and occasional travel to Berthold HQ in Germany.
About the Role
Berthold Technologies is looking for an experienced, hands-on Field Service Manager to lead and develop our UK & Ireland Field Service team.
This is a technical leadership role for someone who wants to manage and develop a team while remaining closely involved with the technology. For an experienced Senior or Lead Field Service Engineer, this could also be an excellent opportunity to take the next step into team leadership while remaining technically hands-on. You will continue to work directly on installations, commissioning, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and more technically challenging customer projects.
Berthold specialises in radiometric process measurement and radiation protection technology, alongside our Bioanalytics instrumentation portfolio. Our Process Control systems use radiometric / nucleonic measurement principles for applications including level, density, concentration and bulk flow across a wide range of industrial processes. Our Radiation Protection portfolio includes radiation detection and monitoring, contamination measurement, activity measurement, dose and dose-rate monitoring and other specialist radiation measurement systems.
Many of our systems are configured around individual customer applications. You will therefore need to understand the application and system configuration, get into the technical detail when required and work closely with Berthold application and product specialists to ensure systems are successfully installed and commissioned.
You will take the lead on more complex installations and commissioning projects, provide technical support when challenging issues arise and help ensure knowledge and experience are shared across the UK team.
A key part of the role will be developing our future Field Service capability. You will coach and train engineers, identify development needs, coordinate technical training with Berthold HQ and help recruit and develop additional engineers as the business grows.
For an experienced Senior or Lead Field Service Engineer, this could also be an excellent opportunity to take the next step into team leadership while remaining technically hands-on.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, support and develop our UK & Ireland Field Service team through coaching, mentoring, knowledge sharing and structured technical development.
- Remain actively involved in installation, commissioning, preventative maintenance, calibration, fault finding and repair, taking the technical lead on more complex projects and technical issues.
- Understand customer applications and how Berthold’s radiometric and radiation measurement systems are configured to meet specific requirements.
- Work closely with Berthold application, product and technical specialists on customer-specific systems and challenging technical projects.
- Plan and coordinate installations, commissioning, planned maintenance and reactive service activities across the UK & Ireland.
- Undertake product and application training with Berthold HQ and transfer that knowledge effectively into the UK team.
- Identify future skills, training and recruitment requirements as the UK business and installed base grow.
- Support the continued development of preventative maintenance programmes, service contracts and lifecycle support.
- Ensure field activities are undertaken safely and in accordance with relevant radiation protection, health & safety and customer-site requirements.

- A good electrical, electronic, instrumentation or controls background.
