🔎 Economic Crime Investigator - Transaction Monitoring (x2 roles) 📍 Birmingham / Hybrid | 💼 Fixed Term (12 months)
We’re looking for two Economic Crime Investigators to join our Transaction Monitoring team on a 12‑month fixed term contract.
This is a critical role at the front line of our financial crime defence. You’ll investigate alerts, analyse customer behaviour and make risk-based decisions that directly protect customers and the Bank from financial crime.
From money laundering and sanctions breaches to fraud and APP scams , your work will have a real, immediate impact, particularly in real-time scenarios where your judgement can stop funds from being lost.

🔑 What You’ll Be Doing Investigation &​ Decision Making
- Investigate transaction monitoring alerts (monetary and non-monetary) across a range of financial crime risks
- Assess transactional activity to identify potential AML, fraud, sanctions breaches and other criminal behaviour
- Determine the appropriate level of investigation based on risk indicators and customer behaviour
- Decide when payments should be held or delayed to prevent financial loss
- Apply account restrictions where required and escalate high-risk activity
- Identify when suspicious activity should be reported (including SARs to the NCA)
- Recommend customer offboarding where activity sits outside risk appetite
Fraud &​ Scam Prevention (Real-Time)
- Investigate real-time fraud and APP scam alerts, making fast, accurate decisions
- Use internal systems, transaction data and open-source research to assess fraud risk
- Collaborate with internal teams to act quickly and prevent customer harm
Analysis &​ Behavioural Assessment
- Analyse patterns, trends and anomalies in transactional activity
- Assess behavioural changes to identify potential criminal activity
- Use customer data and intelligence to support clear decision making
- Identify emerging risks and escalate where needed
Customer &​ Stakeholder Interaction
- Engage with customers (where appropriate) to clarify activity and gather information
- Maintain clear, structured case notes and rationale for all decisions
- Work closely with colleagues across Financial Crime and wider teams
Regulatory Compliance &​ Reporting
- Ensure investigations align with UK Money Laundering Regulations, JMLSG guidance and internal policies
- Raise and document SARs where required
- Embed Treating Customers Fairly principles into decision making
Continuous Improvement
- Provide feedback on transaction monitoring rules, scenarios and alert effectiveness
- Support improvements to detection capability and reduction of false positives
- Contribute insights to enhance processes, workflows and operational efficiency
🎯 What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in Transaction Monitoring within banking or financial services
- Strong knowledge of AML, CTF, sanctions and fraud frameworks
- Experience investigating transaction alerts and identifying suspicious patterns
- Familiarity with transaction monitoring systems and alert platforms
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex data and behaviours
- Excellent attention to detail and investigative judgement
- Strong communication skills, including clear documentation of decisions
- Ability to manage a caseload independently and make timely, risk-based decisions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant financial crime tools
🌟 Desirable Experience
- Experience improving or optimising monitoring rules and scenarios
- Professional qualifications (e.g. ICA, ACAMS)
- Understanding of payments processing, fraud typologies and customer behaviour
- Experience in values-led or purpose-driven organisations
