Job Description

Communications Specialist - 9 Month FTC

Exclusive opportunity to join a large, complex public sector organisation on an interim basis, leading a strategic review of its communications function. This is a high-profile assignment for an experienced communications professional who can quickly assess the current landscape, identify opportunities for improvement and develop a modern, fit-for-purpose communications strategy aligned to organisational priorities.

Working closely with senior leadership, you will combine strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, undertaking a comprehensive communications diagnostic before producing a clear implementation roadmap and supporting the early stages of delivery. The role offers the opportunity to influence organisational change within a politically sensitive and highly regulated environment.

Hybrid working – 3 days in office, 2 at home in Suffolk

9 month FTC - £65k (prorated for 9 months)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a comprehensive review of the organisation's internal and external communications activity, identifying strengths, gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Conduct communications diagnostics and current-state assessments to inform future direction.
  • Develop a refreshed communications strategy aligned to organisational objectives and wider business priorities.
  • Produce practical implementation plans and governance frameworks to support successful delivery.
  • Provide strategic communications advice and challenge to senior leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Support organisational change initiatives through effective change communications planning.
  • Review communications channels, messaging, processes and operating models to improve effectiveness and consistency.
  • Advise on branding and organisational identity projects where appropriate.
  • Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, influencing decisions and securing buy-in for recommended approaches.
  • Support the initial implementation of strategic recommendations, ensuring practical and sustainable outcomes.

Skills &​ Experience

  • Proven experience delivering interim communications assignments, either as an Interim Communications Lead, Communications Consultant or senior communications specialist.
  • Strong expertise across both internal and external communications.
  • Demonstrable experience undertaking communications audits, diagnostics and gap analysis.
  • Experience designing and implementing communications strategies within complex organisations.
  • Strong change communications experience, supporting organisational transformation programmes.
  • Experience operating within public sector, government or other highly regulated environments is highly desirable.
  • Previous involvement in organisational branding or rebranding initiatives would be advantageous.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage and influence senior executives.
  • Strong analytical capability, with the ability to translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with experience producing high-quality strategic documentation.
  • Credible, confident and comfortable operating within complex, politically sensitive environments.
  • A practical, delivery-focused approach with the ability to balance strategic thinking and hands-on execution.
